Java Blawan Coffee

Java Blawan Coffee

All the main coffee-growing properties in East Java are located in the Ijen Volcanic Zone. The Arabica plant was brought to Indonesia around 1696 and has been grown commercially to this day. The altitude range suitable for growing coffee varies between 3000 and 6000 feet, with the majority of coffee grown around 4500 feet.

Surrounded by volcanoes and lush forests, Blawan is the perfect region to grow Arabica coffee at high altitudes. In total, there are around 3000 hectares of land for growing coffee. The property itself is state owned and dates back to the Dutch colonial period and coffee has been grown ever since. Local families have been working on this land for generations and their knowledge and expertise in this plant is unmatched.

Harvest takes place in the period between June and September. During this period, the workforce reaches around 3000 people. Majority of the workers come from the other 9 villages around. Thanks to the high quality coffee and high prices, all those who work here earn more than the national minimum wage. Unlike other coffees in the region, especially those coming from private estates, the Java coffee that comes from here is completely washed and peeled.

The facilities are of a very high standard, with a cupping and a roasting room dedicated to increasing farmers' knowledge of how coffee should taste. In this way, they can observe changes in harvest and crops and make comparisons with neighboring farms. Thanks to all these, the farmers here can transfer their skills more easily and realize how important their lives are in maintaining the quality of the sector.
